This stuff has gathered a lot of dust since I made it, but i'll post it anyways.

Up first is an example of a few of the models I made for Auto Assault (released in 2006, and these models are probably from 2004). Unfortunately I didn't look to post anything from then and I seem to have lost most of my old files, including the textures for these.

Up next is the character I created for Warmonger: Operation Downtown Destruction (published in 2007). We contracted Massive Black to do some character concept work for this, and then I modeled the rest. It was a fun challenge, as I hadn't done something this involved before. Modeled in 3dsmax, and mudbox. Textures done in photoshop. I also did all the Unreal Engine 3 material setup.

LU Racing R+D

When we first started to develop race tracks within LEGO Universe, we weren't really sure how we wanted to visually represent them. We all kind of agreed on a "theme park" type experience since a racetrack is essentially on rails.

Up first was the Gnarled Forest raceway. I had the idea that it would be cool to take the player through the key points of the level in the same order and decided to sketch it up.

Everyone seemed to like that approach and we moved on. During polish for the tracks I did several paintovers, including this one of the start point.

Here is another one of the Nimbus Station track, going from simple block-in to a much more refined look.

LU - Misc conceptual work

Some early research into what planetoids in LU could look like. Some of these looked pretty cool when we tried them out in skyboxes.

When we first started looking at the Ninjago zones, the initial plan was to do a dungeon for each element. These were some studies I had done to explore the earth dungeon.

After picking one of the above studies, I refined further.

A very, very early look at pet cover (then called pet ranch).

The oldest bit of R+D here. This was part of an initial visual style study we did for assets, and was used in the first 2 versions of gnarled forest that we made. I both modeled the asset, and painted the texture.

More LU work - Ninjago Monastery

Here is some miscellaneous LEGO Universe Ninjago Monastery work, in no particular order.

Early study of the caves hidden behind the monastery.

Early color study and simplification pass of the monastery core. The area was loosely based on the cartoon, and our first pass of "LEGO Universe-ing" it ended up too noisy and complicated. I took the first pass assets and modified them, colored them and rendered them out into the simpler form you see here.

Here is a paintover looking back at the entrance to the caves, and into the storeroom. I painted over the block-in assets for this one.

Some paintovers of the different elemental courtyards. They all started as a similar set of assets, and I helped provide the treatment that would theme them like the different elements that they needed to represent.

A few ideas I had about how to create different elemental looks using similar assets.

A painting defining the landing area at the beginning of the Ninjago area. The concept changed later to something friendlier, but I really liked the style of this one.

I haven't touched UDK since I worked on warmonger a few years ago, and then I didn't get very in-depth. Today I fired it up and relearned how to import/place assets and create materials and lights. I used a rock pillar I did a while back, baked out some normals and occlusion maps, and mocked up some quick diff/spec/spec power textures.

Work Dump 3 - Fire Dungeon

Before our studio was shut down, we were working on an area of LEGO Universe based on their IP, Ninjago. There were several dungeons to be created, including one based on the element fire.

I was involved in establishing a modular way to create these dungeons, defining the entrance, and refining and polishing the final assets.

I may dig up the modular system concepts and models at another time, so for now you get the other two.

This is the entrance scene initial sketch:

I also created a quick 3d mockup, which I then painted over for a color study.

Work dump 2 - Forbidden Valley

The next example of concept work I did during LEGO Universe development is Forbidden Valley.

One of the key features in the map was a giant tree in the center that had multiple NPC's and missions on it, and a dojo up in the branches.

Here is the first pass sketch I did.

From this, I started to explore how to integrate this idea into the gameplay space and at the proper scale.

At the next stage, the environment artist modeled this, and integrated a rough model into the scene. I then took this model into 3DSmax, refined it, rendered it with some lights, and then did a detail/polish pass painting over the render.

Work dump 1 - Crux prime

I'm starting to sift through the work I did over the years on LEGO Universe. As a lead and R+D concept artist, I didn't spend much time doing production asset creation. What I did do that is worth showing is a lot of paintover work and scene development. Our art pipeline for levels was heavily based on crafting "scene reveals," which the player would see on entering a new area of the game. They usually started with a level block-in started by design, and coordinated with an environment lead, the AD and myself.

To start, here are multiple stages of an area called "crux prime."

The first stage was done by myself and a designer, where the designer defined the space they needed, and I started to drop in these rock "shard" modular chunks to define a vista. Once design and I generally agreed on the space, I then started to thumbnail the initial reveal into something more epic.

Here are several thumbnails of the start point.

And here is the final painting I ended up with. We then worked to refine it into what ended up in the game.

The company I worked for shut it's doors and laid everyone off about a month ago. As I piece together the things I worked on over the years for a portfolio, I'm also focusing on some newer personal work. Here is a close-up of a dragon that's part of a larger fantasy piece that i'm working on. It's exciting and refreshing to sit down and see what I can make using the techniques I've been developing over the years.

I picked up a cheap flash diffuser for my sb-600 speedlight. I killed some time before going to the grocery store by taking dumb photos of myself using the remote trigger.

This is about as close as I can focus. You can see the ring of where my contact lens is around my iris.

None of the video shots were extensively planned, I just grabbed a few shots here and there and edited them together into something that slightly makes sense. I've been playing with the latest iteration of zbrush lately. Dynamesh is revolutionary in how it allows you to work - free from the traditional trappings of 3d vertex pulling and stretching. Here's a doodle I did starting from a sphere.

Zbrush just gets more and more fun the more I use it and get familiar.

Today I:

-reworked her face (i'm still not happy with it, but it's better),

-did the posing (ignore her awkward arm, I haven't figured out what I want to do with it),

-added the tree and leaves (there will be more).

There's still a fair amount of refinement to do on the model as well, including her hair and toes. Some parts of her anatomy still bug me too. It will probably be a while before I finish, but I think it may be 3d-print worthy by the time i'm done.

I tried out a program called Photofly recently. Photofly takes a series of photos and automagically creates a 3d model from them. It works surprisingly well. I've run about 12 different objects through it so far, and for the most part they all worked pretty well. The most successful is this one I did of Brett. It took about 25ish photos on an overcast day. I didn't grab quite enough of the back of his head, so that part is missing.

I also made a low poly version (not shown) using some zbrush voodoo. It really seems like this could be a viable workflow for actor-based 3d characters.

This was my first time back to do painting in quite a while so I felt pretty rusty. It started out strong, but about halfway through i realized I made some bad color decisions. I rushed the rest, doing what I could do to repair it, but didn't get it quite as good as I had hoped.

Digital life sculpting

I tried zbrushing from life today and i'm pretty pleased with the results. I didn't move around the model at all, and guessed at some of the anatomy because of it. I did seem to have a successful workflow, so with some additional practice, and some time to move around the model I should be able to achieve some neat stuff.

I tried to push it a few directions here. The closest one to what I was thinking was the barbarian-esque leather and fur outfit. I still think i want to make him shaggier and dirtier, but it's a start. To break away from the stereotypical design I also tried the modern gangsta centaur, complete with centaur sweatpants.

I've been continuing to read Stapleton Kearns' blog and his insight really gives me a different perspective on what's important in an image. Today I focused on "seeing," which I interpreted to mean looking at the image as a whole, at what's important, and bringing out the shapes that define the image. The pallette is loosely inspired by some of the images he was presenting as well.

Today went well in my opinion. I've reading this blog: http://stapletonkearns.blogspot.com/ lately, and his breakdowns on Sargent's work have been making me think. While I still have a long way to go to be great, I find it very helpful to have an artistic goal in mind when I start these. Some of the basics I was thinking of here were: conveying form with simpler planes/shapes, limiting my pallette to a few colors in both light and shadow, and having a stronger definition between my light and shadow. I also used a "brushier" brush this time instead of my usual circles, and added a sharpen at the end to bring out the textures.

Rocky Mountain National Park photos

I went to Rocky Mountain National Park for the first time yesterday, definitely a beautiful areas, especially really high above the treeline.

This was the best pano I managed to grab. The exposure gets a bit too dark in places for my taste, but overall i'm pretty happy with it.

The composition could have been better, but this is the best shot I managed to grab of this guy.

This tiny hummingbird was just sitting on a bush near a restaurant up by grand lake. It was letting everyone get very close.

I think when I have a face to look at I get caught up in making sure I get a likeness, which unfortunately puts some of the other finish to the wayside. I still sort of like this one, but more for it's accuracy as a portrait and less for it's creative merits.

Here's tonight's painting. I like it, although because it's not as good as the previous one, I don't love it. It's presentable though. It feels too similar in style to the previous one in terms of technique and color style- I feel like I should switch it up to something different next time.

I started out today with art rage 3 to see if I could produce something worth looking at. I can't decide if I like it or not. It's different for me, so I have a hard time telling if it is appealing.

I had about half an hour left, and I didn't know how to polish the artrage piece properly, so I pulled it into photoshop. I blurred the image, overlaid my original linework, and painted in photoshop. I like the results, especially considering how quickly I did it.

I went to figure drawing again today after missing a few weeks due to being out of town. I also borrowed an intuos 4 to give it a try. I definitely like the subtlety of pressure it allows.

I went for a different approch with my pallete this time around and i'm pretty happy with the results.

I haven't had a chance to do a lot of art lately as I have been in and out of town for the last month or so. I'll see if i can get some architecture drawings in New Orleans next week to make up for it.

One black and white here, and then the following 2 are the first figure work I have ever done starting in color instead of black and white. I am already learning a ton about how to handle it, I think i'm going to continue this way for a while. I was intimidated by trying to pick a pallete at first, but now i'm starting to think it's kind of fun.

I've got a new blend brush that I like quite a bit. I ran out of time before I completely finished this piece, but I still like the end result the most out of my digital figure work.

I picked up a nikon D40 recently and have been having a lot of fun with it. At the risk of diluting the painty and 3d image content here, here are a few pics of my car that I had fun with.

I tried a different technique for this one, i was hoping to get a more charcoal look out of it. I think it was successful early on, but then I over rendered. Maybe i'll save this technique for shorter poses.

I went back to the art student's league again tonight. It's inspiring to see myself get better at digital figure work and digital rendering.
